Once a police officer lodged a case against any person , it has to be bring to notice of nearest magistrate and once magistrate take cognizance(notice) of the case lodged by police then they order for investigation of that concerned case and issue summons to suspected persons and it will be notified later to the person where allegation has made against that person.

Before Understanding the criminal cases we have to know its classification
There are usually State Cases & PCR ( Private Complaints) , state case by police report where police lodge the case and bring the matter to notice of magistrate and private complaints will be lodged by publlice. Once a complaint is lodged against any person it will be notified through summons/calling person to station by notice of police or summons served by court.
