Online degree scam, took payment now not responding

29-Aug-2025 (In Criminal Law)
Hi, so I have got in contact with someone who agreed to get me a degree without having to attend college, which i understand is wrong, but I needed it so I went ahead. He took the payment and now simply said that his guy has gotten caught and refused to respond. He is clearly lying. I have all records and proof. Is there anything I can do?

What seems to be the problem here is that the agreement you entered into was an illegal agreement. You will have to be very cautious about how you frame your complaint otherwise it may have an adverse effect. Safest way is to send a legal notice. You can contact me for in depth advice.

Obtaining any academic degree or certificate without attending the required college or course is illegal and constitutes academic fraud. Your admission that you paid money for a fake degree means both you and the person who took payment could face consequences if discovered. However, since you have been cheated and did not receive any degree, you are the victim of fraud and criminal breach of trust. You may file a formal police complaint (FIR) for cheating and fraud under Section 420 and Section 406 of the Indian Penal Code against the individual who took payment from you. Attach all records, communications, payment receipts, and proof available. Emphasize that you were deceived, did not receive any fake degree, and now seek recovery of your money and action against the accused. Do not attempt to pursue the illegal degree matter further, as it could expose you to legal risk. Focus solely on recovering your money and holding the scammer accountable. If police hesitate or you fear harassment, consult a criminal lawyer to file the complaint and protect your interests. Keep all evidence confidential and do not share it further. This is strictly legal advice based on your facts.

First of all rather than going legally you should serve him/her a legal notice and in that notice you can write that either pay my money or face legal action which will be at your own risk. After that if he/she fails to give you a satisfactory reply then you can anytime file a recovery suit in the court to claim your money back along with compensations.
