Need advise on domestic abuse and threats

26-Sep-2026 (In Criminal Law)
Hello, I need confidential legal advice regarding an abusive relationship. My partner has physically abused me multiple times and threatens to harm me if I leave or approach the police. I am a single mother to a 12-year-old son and have no family support. I fear retaliation. I want to understand my legal options, protection available to me, and the safest way to leave without putting myself or my son at risk.

If you are in immediate danger, prioritize safety and call 112 or move with your son to a safe/public place; legally, you can seek protection under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, including protection/no-contact orders, residence-related relief, monetary relief, custody orders and compensation, and you may approach the police, Protection Officer, or a Magistrate. Since you fear retaliation, avoid confronting your partner alone—secure important documents, money, medicines and your child’s essentials, preserve messages/photos/medical records as evidence, and arrange a safe place and trusted contact before leaving. You can also seek assistance through the 181 Women Helpline and a local legal-aid service for confidential support.
