Is it legal to approach women in public places in Chennai/India?

Is it legal in Chennai/India to approach a woman in a public place and start a polite conversation? Sometimes the interaction is friendly, sometimes the woman is uncomfortable or her relatives/bystanders intervene and confront me. I want to know: where is the legal line between a normal approach and harassment/stalking? What laws apply, and what is the safest legal way to handle such situations to avoid trouble?
In India, approaching a woman in a public place and initiating a polite conversation is not illegal by itself. However, the moment the woman expresses discomfort, disinterest, or asks you to stop, continuing the interaction may amount to harassment or stalking. Relevant laws include Section 354A IPC (sexual harassment) and Section 354D IPC (stalking). Repeated attempts, following, unwanted communication, or intimidating behaviour can attract criminal liability. The safest legal course is to disengage immediately if the woman appears uncomfortable, avoid repeated approaches, and respect personal boundaries to prevent any legal complications.
