Dowry demand and harrassment by in laws

30-Nov-2023 (In Criminal Law)
My daughter got married with one with all Hindu Rituals. After six months of her marriage when I visited her, she was quite upset and depressed and after asking she told me that she had extensive argument with her husband and her in laws. Then I came back home. After 10 days my daughter called me up crying telling that her husband had beat her up and her mother in law was standing and watching. She also told me that they had demanded 5 lakhs dowry amount. Her father in law also said that we have to pay the same otherwise they will keep on torturing my daughter for lifetime. Sir I am from a small family and also spent a lot on their marriage and also have given furniture and electronics after marriage. Sir, please save my daughter.

This is a complete case of 498 a of Indian penal code. If you wants to get remedy from this problem then you have to write a written complain against your daughter's in_ law's before the nearest police station. And the said written complaint should be signed by your daughter. And you should specifically mentioned about the physical and mental torture by the in-laws . And also be explained about the extra demand of dowry.

Allow me to pay my humble respects to you,

I agree with what you say, however going into further details of the facts and law i express my inability to give further advice.
The Family Court mediation centre in CBD, near Hon'ble High Court of Calcutta has developed a reputation to arbitrate amicably.

Im sorry for your state of situation!!!
Your daughter should immediately go for medical examination in her nearest Government Hospital if physical violence occur again. This will provide grounds of physical violence perpetuated by her In-Laws.
As far as dowry demand are concerned she can file complain in her nearest police station stating all grounds of complain along with Medical report annexed.
Please do not pay any dowry since both the person asking for dowry and person paying dowry both will be held guilty.
Take firm timely action and save life of your daughter.

It's a quite normal activities in the husband house by husband and in laws. You can proceed with 498A IPC with 3,4 d. P. Act. OR also you can file the 125 crpc. And d. V. Act against your daughter's husband and also her in laws. For further assistance you can contact me.

Lodge an FIR at the police station briefing all the facts. Take advice from an advocate who is practicing criminal law to proceed further. But before taking any steps have a discussion with your daughter and family. Ultimately it's her life and if she is ready to dissolve the said marriage or not.
