Can 3-year-old unknown-FIR from other state affect police verification

23-Oct-2025 (In Criminal Law)
About 3 years ago, during a clg relationship an incident happened in another state that still worry me. I lived there for 1 more year after that & then moved to my permanent add.(different state). I was never contacted, summoned, or informed by police/court & don’t even know if any FIR was ever filed. Preparing for govt exam but fear an unknown/inactive FIR might exist. Should I continue my preparation confidently, or can such a case if it exists, cause life problem beyond administrative issues.

Under Indian law, an incident from 3 years ago in another state, with no contact, summons, or information from police or courts, and no known FIR, is unlikely to impact your government exam or job application unless an inactive or unacted FIR exists. Police verification typically considers active criminal records or pending cases within the jurisdiction. If an FIR was filed but remains dormant due to incorrect details or lack of follow-up, it may not surface unless updated or reopened. To proceed confidently, obtain a police clearance certificate from the state of the incident and verify records with the local police or eCourt site. If issues arise, consult a lawyer to address potential administrative or legal concerns.

For your peace of mind, you may apply for a police verification / character certificate from your current jurisdiction or file an RTI to the police station of that area asking whether any FIR exists in your name. This is a lawful and safe method to confirm the status. contact me for more details
