legal firm claiming 6 months late that my bills to them were inflated

I am in Bangalore, work online for a legal firm in kolkata.I do online ROC search from MCA21 & give them report & challan.I am associated with this firm since last 7 years.But, I do not have any legal contract with them.I send them bills by mail & they pay me by cheque & get it deposited in my a/c.However,they have framed me stating that my last 6 months bill were inflated & they came to know now.they have blamed accounts deptt.for that.However,my logic is that they have not paid me in cash & they have paid in cheque after verifying my bills.Now, they are harassing me by asking for my accounts
The first course of action must be to issue a legal notice to them, or a reply if they have already issued one to you.
Contracts need not always been written in India and they can be oral as well. If they agreed to your terms even via e-mail, it would be enough to serve your purpose.
