An Income Share Agreement (ISA) is a financial arrangement commonly used in education and vocational training, where a student agrees to pay a fixed percentage of their future income for a set period instead of upfront tuition fees. This model is gaining popularity in India and abroad as an alternative to traditional student loans. Under an ISA, no payment is required until the student secures employment with a minimum income threshold. Once employed, the student pays a predetermined percentage (usually 5–15%) of their monthly income for a defined term (typically 2–5 years), or until a payment cap is reached. One major advantage of ISAs is risk-sharing. If the student earns less or remains unemployed, repayment adjusts accordingly, offering flexibility and financial safety. However, critics argue that ISAs may become expensive for high earners and may include unfair terms if not properly regulated. In India, ISAs are still evolving and are offered mainly by private ed-tech platforms and skill-based training institutions. Legal clarity, regulatory oversight, and standardization are essential to ensure that ISA contracts protect students’ rights and do not become exploitative. With proper safeguards, ISAs can be a transformative tool for inclusive and affordable education financing.
