You would need to examine your terms of employment carefully, as companies may claim intellectual property rights over any product created by you during the term of employment. Even if the work product may not have been strictly as per your existing work portfolio.
Seeking their permission to freelance, is likely to backfire upon you.
Therefore, it may be better to act as a third party consultant to individuals who would execute the mandate.
