Mother’s Name Mismatch in Educational and ID Documents

25-Jul-2025 (In Civil Law)
I am 33 years old. My mother's name is "Shashi Chawla" in my educational documents, while it appears as "Shashi Bala Chawla" in all other documents. Now, I want to apply for a fresh passport and would prefer to have her name as "Shashi Bala Chawla" in my passport. Would an affidavit stating that both names refer to the same person be sufficient for passport issuance? If not, what alternative steps can I take to resolve this issue?

Hello, Please note that merely executing an affidavit will not be sufficient for the required legal compliance or public notice. In such matters, especially where public awareness or third-party acknowledgment is essential—such as name changes, loss of documents, ownership declarations, or any public declaration—publication in a widely circulated newspaper is also required. This step ensures that the information is available to the general public and serves as an official record to avoid any future disputes or claims. Therefore, along with the affidavit, it is advisable that you get the contents of the affidavit published in both an English and a regional language newspaper for broader coverage and validity. This combined process will strengthen your claim or declaration legally and procedurally.

You can resolve this issue by executing an affidavit declaring that “Shashi Chawla” and “Shashi Bala Chawla” are one and the same person. Such affidavit, along with supporting ID proofs, is generally accepted by the Passport Authority. Additionally, it is advisable to publish a name clarification in two local newspapers and keep a copy for records. If required, you may also get the same published in the Gazette of India for stronger validity. With these documents, your passport application should not face any difficulty.
