Is it necessary to have an advocate for civil suit

I want to know that for civil cases also . Is it mandatory to have an advocate to file a case... Can a plaintiff self fight his case in court?
Yes, a party can very well conduct the case in person but it is advisable to have an advocate as there are legal principles involved which the plaintiff may not be aware of and which may ultimately prove detrimental to the case.
