My kids name in birth certificate is as [ Initial Name] & in Aadhar as [ name INITIAL]. When seeking for new admission in a school, they ask name to be as in Birth certificate, but her name is as per aadhar in current school. Thought of removing Initial completely & made request to remove initial from name in TC. But school demanding gazette change. What shall I do?
Gazette notification is generally mandatory in India to legalize a name change for official government records, including school certificates and Aadhaar cards. The school is correct in demanding an official document for a permanent change in their records, as an affidavit alone may not suffice for major updates or future documentation like passports or board exams.
Recommended Steps to Resolve the Name Mismatch
Prepare a Name Change Affidavit: The first step is to draft an affidavit on a non-judicial stamp paper, signed by you (the parent) and notarized. This document should clearly state the child's current name, the desired new name (removing the initial), and the reason for the change.
Publish Newspaper Advertisements: You need to publish an advertisement in at least two newspapers—one in a local vernacular language and one in English—announcing the name change. Keep the original newspaper cuttings as proof.
Apply for Gazette Notification: This is the most crucial step. You must submit an application to the Department of Publication in New Delhi, along with the notarized affidavit, newspaper clippings, the child's birth certificate and ID proofs, and the prescribed application form. Once published, the Gazette notification is the legal proof of the name change.
Update School Records and Aadhaar: After obtaining the Gazette notification, submit a copy to the current school administration to get the Transfer Certificate (TC) issued with the correct name. You will also use the Gazette copy to update the child's name in their Aadhaar card at a permanent Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
