Defamation is more about an ego battle . And if someone has defamed you , yes you should fight for it . The court fee in court case will be around 2500. For a defamation suit generally advocate would charge anywhere between 10-20 thousand for drafting and 2-3 thousand per hearing .

The court fee for filing a defamation lawsuit valued at ₹1 lakh in the Delhi District Court is approximately ₹3,540. However, you must also budget for legal fees, which can typically range from ₹20,000 to over ₹50,000 for the initial stages, depending on the complexity of your case and your lawyer's experience. Therefore, your total initial outlay for court and legal fees could easily be between ₹30,000 to ₹60,000. Before proceeding, it is crucial to assess if your case is legally worthwhile. A recent Delhi High Court judgment dismissed a defamation suit and imposed a cost of ₹1 lakh on the plaintiff, highlighting that you must have very strong evidence, present the full context of the defamatory statement, and often first exhaust alternative remedies like social media grievance procedures. Given the substantial costs and the risk of an adverse order, it is highly recommended you consult with a lawyer to review the specific merits of your case before filing.

As per the relevant law, the court fee amounts to 3% of the claim. So, it would amount to 3, 000 in this case. You must intiate legal action for any wrong done to you if the damage is grave. In this manner you will prevent other person to commit the wrong again. As you said defamation has been commited, you must ensure that the defamatory content is not truth. Otherwise, all the efforts will go in vein. More and so, it will backfire. If you have a strong case, you must take strict legal action and don't let the perpetrator move scotfree. I would suggest you should also initiate criminal defamtion alonside civil proceeding. It will create mental pressure on the accused to settle the matter as soon as possible. Additionally, it will give you strong bargaining position during the settlement. You should not let the perpetrator think that you lack teeth to frame him for his deed.

Whether a defamation suit for Rs 1 lakh is “worth it” really depends on several factors. If the defamation is serious, public, or has caused real harm such as damage to your professional reputation, financial loss, or mental distress then filing a suit can act as a strong deterrent and help clear your name. It is also useful if you have solid evidence in the form of statements, documents, or witnesses. Sometimes, the purpose is not just money but to take a stand and send a clear message, and in such cases the non-monetary value can be more important. Before filing any suit, it is advisable to consult a competent legal professional who can guide you on the right strategy. The court fee for a Rs 1,00,000 claim is generally modest usually around Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500. Lawyer fees differ from advocate to advocate and also vary depending on the court and location where you plan to file the suit. Speaking to a good lawyer will help you plan the best approach.

For a defamation damages suit valued at ₹1,00,000 in Delhi District Court, the court fee is approximately ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 under the Court Fees Act (ad valorem slab for suits up to ₹1 lakh). Apart from this, you will incur lawyer’s drafting charges, filing expenses, process fees and appearance fees If your primary objective is to stop the defamatory act or put legal pressure, a legal notice followed by a criminal complaint under Section 499/500 IPC may be more effective and less costly also injunctory remedies. If your objective is compensation, the suit is legally maintainable but cost-benefit must be carefully evaluated. If you share the facts of the defamation, can advise whether the case is strong enough to justify filing
