Converted to isalm from hindu while Government job - any issues?
19-Jun-2025 (In Civil Law)
Good aft nun,
Now I am working in police department at a Tamil Nadu government. when i appointed i was in Hindu religion. Right now i converted my religion to Islam from Hindu. Now i want to change my name. Is there any problem will come in my job?
Good afternoon. Since you were appointed as a Hindu and now converted to Islam, you are legally entitled to change your name and religion. However, as a government servant, you must follow proper procedure:
Execute an affidavit for name and religion change.
Publish the change in a local newspaper.
Apply for Gazette notification through the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.
Inform your department officially with supporting documents.
Changing religion is your fundamental right under Article 25 of the Constitution. It will not affect your job if the due procedure is followed properly and there’s no violation of service conduct rules.

Since you’re working in the Tamil Nadu Police Department and have converted from Hinduism to Islam and now wish to change your name, there is no legal bar to doing so—but it must be done properly and officially to avoid issues in service records.
Steps & Points to Note:
1. Execute a Name Change Affidavit on a stamp paper stating your conversion and new name.
2. Publish the name change in a Tamil newspaper and one English newspaper.
3. Submit a Gazette Notification through the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette (mandatory for government employees).
4. After Gazette publication, apply to your department (through proper channel) with all proofs to update your service records.
Important:
• As long as the name and religion change is not for unlawful purposes, and due procedure is followed, your job will not be affected.
• Ensure full transparency with your department to avoid future service or pension complications.
