under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, and that Lingayat tradition emphasizes equality and the wearing of the Ishtalinga rather than rigid caste markers. Constitutional Freedom: Under Indian law, individuals have the fundamental right to practice, profess, and propagate any religion or philosophical belief system of their choice. Core Philosophy: Following Jagadguru Basavanna entails upholding principles of social equality, universal brotherhood, and devotion through the Ishtalinga, transcending conventional caste barriers. Legal Recognition: Self-declaration and adherence to the Vachana literature and Basava Tattva are traditionally and legally sufficient for personal and social recognition as a Lingayat.

You identify yourself as Lingayat. You may opt for others in the religion category in government forms, nobody will stop you. However the government sees Lingayaths as part of Hindu society. The partition, succession and wills take place as per Hindu laws and you will be governed by them regardless of you identifying yourself as Lingayath
