Addition of surname to CBSE 10th mark sheet

09-Apr-2026 (In Civil Law)
Hi, My son's birth certificate has only given name without initials or surname. However his Aadhar and passport have surname. He appeared for the CBSE 10th exam last month (2026) without having surname as they went by birth certificate. Now we learnt this needs to be kept in sync with Aadhar and other documentation without surname which I find problem prone. Hence I want to apply for the surname inclusion in his 10th mark sheet from CBSE. Need your help on the process to get through. Thanks.

understand your concern regarding the discrepancy between your son’s name in the birth certificate and his other identity documents such as Aadhaar and passport. Consistency in name across all records is important to avoid future legal and administrative complications. In your case, since your son has already appeared for the CBSE Class 10 examination with the name as per the birth certificate (without surname), correction or inclusion of surname in the CBSE mark sheet is possible, but subject to the rules of the Central Board of Secondary Education. Generally, CBSE permits corrections or changes in candidate name based on supporting documents. You will need to submit an application for name correction through the school where your son studied, along with documents such as Aadhaar, passport, and a corrected birth certificate (if updated). In some cases, CBSE may also require a Gazette notification or affidavit declaring the correct name. We can assist you in preparing the necessary affidavit, advising on Gazette publication if required, and guiding you through the CBSE application process to ensure smooth correction. Please feel free to share copies of all relevant documents for further assistance.

In your case, there is a mismatch between the name in the birth certificate and other documents like Aadhaar and passport. As per CBSE rules, the name in the mark sheet is generally based on school records, which in turn rely on the birth certificate. Post-publication changes are allowed but subject to strict procedures. Firstly, you should decide whether you want to add surname in the birth certificate or remove surname from other documents to maintain uniformity. The preferable legal route is to correct the birth certificate. You can apply for correction of name in the birth certificate before the concerned Registrar of Births and Deaths by submitting supporting documents (Aadhaar, passport, school records, affidavit, etc.). In some cases, a Gazette notification may also be required. Once the birth certificate is corrected, you can apply to CBSE through the school for correction in the mark sheet with supporting documents. If authorities refuse, you may approach the High Court by way of writ petition seeking direction for correction. It is advisable to first regularise the birth certificate and then proceed with CBSE correction.
