Introduce stricter law against road rage-Delhi High Court to Centre
August 23, 2017On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court instructed Centre to introduce a stringent law to address road rage.
A plea was filed by a second-year law student of Delhi University, Anubhav Gupta, saying “No specific statute is there to deal with road rage.” He further asserted, “Statutes are there to deal with the consequences of rage only when it increases to despicable and abominable levels.” Highlighting the increasing menace of road rage in the country, the plea urged the court “to give proper definition of road rage”. Presently, the culprits who behave violently on roads cannot be booked for a crime on account of lucane in law. There should be strict punishment for people engaging in road rage.
His plea urged for a provision of rigorous imprisonment when “the magnitude of harshness exceeds to despicable levels.”
Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also issued notice to Delhi Police in this regard.
Anil Soni, the standing counsel of Central Government argued that the crime of road rage has been duly addressed by the provisions of Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
However, the court is of the view that is a “serious issue” and the government needs to place it’s stand. The court has now fixed the matter for November 2, when the authorities have to place their stand.
