Aadhaar number is required for death certificates from October 1
August 05, 2017From October 1, 2017, death certificates will be required to mention the deceased's Aadhaar number for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased person. Currently, more than 1.16 billion people have already enrolled for Aadhaar. The Registrar General of India has sent a notification to all the states including Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.
The use of Aadhaar will result in ensuring the accuracy of the details furnished by the relatives, dependents or acquaintances of the deceased. Currently, any identity proof of the deceased can be furnished while applying for the death certificate.
The government through its notification said that “ It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud. It will also help in recording the identity of the deceased person. Further, it will obviate the need for producing multiple documents to prove the identity of the deceased person.”
Officials have categorically stated that those who do not have Aadhaar number of the deceased a certificate has to furnished by the applicant that is the case to be to the best of his knowledge.
Any false declaration to conceal Aadhaar number will be considered as an offence under the Aadhar act and Registration of Birth and Death Act. The person applying for the death certificate is required to submit his Aadhaar number as well along with the Aadhaar number of the deceased.
This move is the favor of the deceased family members. All bank accounts are being linked to Aadhaar, in this event, furnishing the deceased Aadhaar number would enable the bank to close all bank accounts of the correct person who has passed an the legal heirs to recover the due amount.
