Living Beside of Canal road can we become land owners legally

My family is living since 35 years beside or on canal(artificial waterway) road. like us almost 30 families are living since 4 decades. Most of us daily labor,we are paying property tax to Village Panchayat regularly since many years. we don't have any government issued house documents yet. we most of us want to construct new houses at our own places. but having a fear that government my demolish in future for any reason as we don't have any documents. can we became land owners legally..? and how to get documents like other have. What kind of rights we have legally..? please give your suggestions. Thanks, Pradeep
You can apply for the registration of the said property in your name by producing the tax receipts and other documents supporting your claim that your family was residing their since decades, after the registration you can file a civil suit of declaration in the jurisdictional civil court. You are entitled to the ownership rights of the property by the doctrine of adverse possession.
