An Annual General Meeting (AGM) in a housing society is a mandatory yearly meeting where all members come together to discuss key issues like financial reports, budget approvals, election of committee members, and overall functioning of the society. It promotes transparency, accountability, and gives residents a chance to voice concerns and participate in decision-making.

Yes, e-voting is allowed in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Special General Meeting (SGM) of housing societies, including for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) members, based on recent legal developments. In 2021, the Supreme Court of India ruled that e-voting can be allowed for cooperative housing societies under the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960, as a part of efforts to promote transparency and ensure participation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Maharashtra Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Act, 2013, also facilitates e-voting to encourage members to vote remotely, a provision that is especially useful for NRIs who are unable to attend meetings physically. Further amendments and circulars from the Maharashtra Government have allowed housing societies to adopt electronic means for voting, ensuring that all members, including those abroad, can participate in decision-making processes like redevelopment. To implement e-voting, the society must ensure the process is properly documented, secure, and transparent, and follow any prescribed procedures. This makes it possible for NRI members to vote in AGMs and SGMs without being physically present.
