The Hindu Succession Act, 1956, originally did not give daughters inheritance rights in ancestral property. They could only ask for a right to sustenance from a joint Hindu family. However, of your father died inestate after December 20, 2004 then you can claim your share in the property as women were given a status of a coparcener on the specified date by 2005 amendment. For this, you will have to file partition suit in the jurisdictional Civil court.
