Compensation for loss of private property during road construction

Hi All, The Govt. is expanding roads as part of master plan due to which we are going to loose part or our open space in front of our house and even some people will also be loosing part of their house. The Govt. is saying we will not get anything for the loss of our property. My question is how is this possible, as Govt. is acquiring our property and not giving us anything. There as also many poor families who are going to loose their houses. Please advise what does law say in this regard.
