Claiming of a house we stay for more than 50years

We have been staying in a society for >50 years my grandfather built the house and the society had no objections as he used to work in the society now the society is in redevelopment and told to vacate the house I wanted to know can we claim that house the electricity bill is in the secretary’s name and the society had given us a written letter 20years back that we will be provided with our own house but now they are denying saying that’s it’s just a piece of paper
