The Supreme Court in 2006 made it compulsory to register every marriage for the protection of women.
The couple on any working day can apply at the office of the Sub-Registrar of a District Court in whose jurisdiction the husband or wife have residences. The groom must be at least 21 years of age and the bride must be at least 18 years of age. The couple must be accompanied by 2 witnesses while registration of marriage.
 
Marriage under Hindu Marriage Act
Under Hindu Marriage Act, verification of all the documents related to both the spouses are carried out on the date of application and a specific date is fixed for registration. On that date of registration, both spouses together with witnesses who attended their marriage should be present to complete the registration formalities.
 
Marriage under Special Marriage Act
Under this Act, both the spouses need to be present after the documents are submitted for the issuance of public notice if there are any objections. Also, a copy of wedding notice is displayed on the notice board of the office and a copy of the notice is sent by registered post to both spouses, on the address given by them. In case there are no objections, registration will be done after thirty days post notice date. Both parties and three witnesses are required to be present on the registration date.
 
In addition to this, to register a marriage one must follow the following procedure-
Apart from this, the following documents are mandatory for the registration of a marriage-
1.    Complete registration application with signatures of both husband and wife.
2.    Proof of DOB- Aadhar card/ Pan card/ Voter ID card/ Passport etc.
3.    Proof of Address- Aadhar card/ Pan card/ Voter ID card/ Passport etc.
4.    Aadhar card.
5.    2 photographs of husband/ wife and 1 marriage photograph.
All these documents must be self-attested.
