Joining bonus return clause as per appointment letter clause

I’m an HR manager. My company verbally extended my probation but never gave written notice. After the extended probation ended, they said I failed but again gave no written communication. I resigned voluntarily with a 2-month notice. My offer letter mentions a 4.5L joining bonus to be returned if I resign/they terminate during probation. Manager later confirmed in writing (cc HR, skip) that there will be no recovery. Can they still ask for the bonus? What's my legal stand?
If the Company had agreed in writing to give a joining bonus to you and now that you have resigned, then you have to return the bonus. However, it is imperative to know as to within how much time are you required to return the same. The company needs to call upon you to return the same.
