Company asking to pay compensation for leaving the job?

the company i am working with at a salary of 15k. i got a better job and want to leave this. i had applied for resignation a month back giving them a notice. now they are saying me to pay 40000 as compensation for the loss to their Company. i have not signed any bond or agreement which states that i have to pay the amount at the time of leaving. what should i do?

There is no need to pay any such amount. If the company proceeds against you in court then they would need to prove such damages by adducing proper evidence. Further, you should issue them a legal notice to strengthen your position. You may also have your documentation vetted by a professional to ensure that you will not be liable for any such alleged damages.
