If someone is blackmailing you about an extramarital affair and threatening to expose you or harm themselves in front of your family, you can take legal action to protect yourself and handle the situation safely in India. Blackmail is a criminal offense, and such threats—including a threat to commit suicide as coercion—are also treated seriously by law You should immediately gather evidence of the blackmail, such as threatening messages, recordings, or emails, and present these to the police.

Hello, In this situation, you can file a complaint at the police station. If you no longer wish to continue the marriage, you may also pursue a mutual divorce, provided your wife agrees to it. At this point, this is the most effective and practical course of action.

Your situation is serious and involves criminal intimidation. No one has the right to blackmail you or threaten to harm themselves at your home. Immediately stop all contact with her and keep proof of every message or call where she threatens you. These threats fall under offences like extortion, criminal intimidation, and abetment of suicide if she tries to blame you. You should inform your family and, if possible, make a written complaint at your nearest police station or through the women’s helpline stating that she is threatening to come to your home and harm herself; this protects you legally. Do not meet her in private at any cost. If she reaches your home, call 112 immediately and let the authorities handle the situation. The law is on your side once you report her threats in advance. Also, avoid further arguments with her and let the legal process protect you.
