Matrimonial issue and abusive in laws

10-Nov-2025 (In Divorce Law)
My in laws mentally abuses me. They have even told me that my father should have given dowry. My mother in law controls everything and does not let me study. Now I have got a job and she has warned me to choose between his son or my job. I can't live in my matrimonial house because of her insults and abusive behaviour. My husband is afraid of his mother and is not ready to move out with me. But I want to save my marriage. I and their son will take care of them but from a distance. What to do?

You are fully protected under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDV Act). Under this law, mental abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, and economic abuse (like being stopped from studying or working) are all forms of domestic violence. You can file a Domestic Violence Complaint through: The Protection Officer in your district, The Women’s Cell of your local police station, or Directly before the Magistrate Court under Section 12 of the Act. You can seek: Protection Order – to restrain your in-laws from contacting, threatening, or harassing you. Residence Order – you have the right to reside in the matrimonial home, even if it’s in their name. Monetary Relief – for expenses, maintenance, and compensation. Counselling or Mediation – if you want to reconcile with your husband but live separately from the in-laws.
