Legal concern about sharing contact of convicted person and liability
20-Jun-2025 (In Criminal Law)
I shared a phone number of a convicted person’s friend but never met or talked to the convicted person or took part in their activities. The convicted person’s friend keeps informing me about ongoing matters. Can I be held liable or convicted for just sharing the number or receiving such information? I want to know if this could implicate me legally and if I should consult a lawyer for protection and advice.
Based on the facts provided, merely sharing a phone number of a convicted person’s friend does not in itself amount to a criminal offence under Indian law, provided you had no knowledge or intention of facilitating any illegal activity. Further, simply receiving information from that person without acting on it or engaging in any criminal conspiracy is not enough to hold you liable. However, if such communications involve any unlawful or suspicious content, or if authorities view this contact as part of a larger investigation, you may come under scrutiny. For your protection, it is advisable to stop further communication with the individual and consult a criminal lawyer for a detailed legal opinion and to stay prepared in case of any inquiry.
