Is buying Instagram followers a crime in India?

Hello sir, I am 19 years old, living in Delhi. I am buying Instagram followers to impress my friends but one of my friend's father who is in law enforcement told me that buying fake followers can be a crime and I should not do it. Is it true that buying fake followers on Instagram and Facebook is a crime? Can I go to jail for the same? I had no idea it is a crime.
