If you have lost money through a wrong, unauthorised or fraudulent bank/UPI transaction, act immediately rather than waiting for the matter to resolve on its own. Keep the transaction ID/UTR, date, amount, screenshots, bank statements and all communication safely preserved. First, inform your bank and raise a formal dispute through the available banking channels. In case of a UPI transaction, also raise the complaint through the concerned UPI application/NPCI mechanism. If the transaction appears fraudulent or unauthorised, report it to the appropriate cybercrime/police authorities without delay. The timing of your complaint can be important in tracing or freezing the funds. If the bank does not properly address your complaint, you may have further remedies, including approaching the bank's grievance mechanism and, where applicable, the RBI Ombudsman.
