It is completely understandable that your father feels exhausted. Dealing with a legal battle for eight years is a heavy emotional and physical burden, especially for a senior citizen. When a case drags on without results, you generally have three primary paths forward. You have the absolute legal right to change counsel at any stage of a proceeding. If you feel the current lawyer is not proactive, fails to communicate or has lost interest in the case, a fresh perspective might help. To hire a new lawyer, you usually need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current advocate. This confirms that their fees have been paid and they are stepping down so someone else can take over.

Yes, your father has the legal right to change his lawyer at any stage if he is unsatisfied with the progress or communication. Leaving the case entirely depends on whether he is the complainant or the accused. If he is the complainant, he can choose to withdraw it (subject to court permission in criminal matters). However, if he is the accused, he cannot simply leave the case and must see it through to avoid legal penalties. I highly recommend seeking a second legal opinion to review the case status before making a final decision.
