Approaching Random Women in Public Places

11-Jun-2025 (In Criminal Law)
I have a question: Is approaching random people considered legal? Specifically, is it legal to approach someone in a private place like a mall or café, even if I'm just giving them a compliment? Can mall owners take action against me, even if the woman is comfortable talking to me?

hi, I can well understand your concern from the query raised, approaching random people and complementing them is not inherently illegal, as long it's done respectfully and without harassment or coercion, however if done with malafide intent it could draw contempt and criminality under section ,73 for stalking, section 79, words intended to insult the modesty of the woman and could be imprisoned for upto 3 years, thank you

Approaching someone in a public place like a mall or café to give a compliment is generally legal, provided it’s respectful and non-harassing. However, mall owners can enforce their own conduct policies, so they could ask you to leave if they find your behavior disruptive. It's best to be polite and aware of their rules.

Approaching someone in a public or semi-public place like a mall or café is not illegal if done respectfully and without harassment. Giving a polite compliment or starting a conversation is not a crime as long as the other person is comfortable and there is no objectionable or repeated behaviour. However, mall premises are private property, and management has the right to set rules of conduct. Even if the woman is comfortable, mall security can ask you to leave if they believe your actions disturb the environment. If your approach is non-threatening and the person is willing to talk, it’s generally not a legal issue, but always respect personal space and property rules. — Adv.
