is copying content from old books for educational software illegal

I just started my profession as software developer..I want to make some educational softwares..I have referred/ used some old books...I have modified their content for my purpose...My software will not affect their business...Should i take permission from author of book ? I am confuesd...what is fair use policy in this ?Can author claim my software future ? please help me.

Under the doctrine of fair use, there is an exception to use copyright for non-profit educational purposes.

However, it also depends upon the quantum of copyrighted material used.

Preferably, give them credit and get a permit to use the copyrighted material.
