Yes, but conditionally. Most Indian universities (as well as those abroad) permit changes in the title and research design under the following legal/academic conditions: 1. University PhD Regulations Refer to the PhD ordinance or regulations of the specific university. Most universities allow: Change in research title, with RAC/DRC/BoS approval Change in methodology/design, if it improves quality, and is academically justified Changes are typically allowed until final submission of the thesis, as long as: The core area of research is not entirely altered The university's regulatory body (like DRC or BOS) formally approves the modification 2. RAC/DRC Role The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) has the authority to: Recommend changes based on academic merit Ensure quality and relevance of research Record suggestions in minutes, and forward for approval to the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) If the RAC suggested the change, and it is academically reasonable, the candidate must: Submit a formal request for change in title and/or design Include justification and revised synopsis Get approval from DRC and Dean/Controller of Examinations, depending on university norms Recommendations for the Candidate Prepare a revised synopsis with updated title, Modified research design/methodology, Justification for changes Submit a formal application to RAC/DRC mentioning that changes were submitted during final submission. Wait for formal approval Do not submit final thesis until all changes are approved in writing Update the research documents All future submissions (pre-submission report, plagiarism check, thesis, etc.) should reflect the new approved title and design
