Yes, there is a legal remedy. First, identify whether the mistake is only in your educational certificates or also in your Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Birth Certificate and other identity documents. If your parents' names are incorrectly mentioned in your records, you should apply for correction before the concerned authorities/boards with supporting documents such as your Birth Certificate, parents' identity documents, school records and an affidavit, if required. If the authority refuses to make the correction despite valid proof, you may approach the competent court seeking a declaration and direction for correction of records. Do not ignore the issue, as discrepancies may create problems in government jobs, passport, higher education, property matters and other legal proceedings. A detailed examination of all documents is necessary before advising the most appropriate course of action.
