Legal action if my college has lost my original marksheets

Why do colleges take original marksheet? I had submitted my original marks certificates of 10th and 12th standard while seeking admission to a Medical college. However, when today I wanted to collect them back, the authorities at my college informed me that they have lost my certificates due to some construction work and displacement of documents. These are very important documents and it would take a lot of time to ask for duplicates. In the meantime I had to apply for certain higher educational institutes, which I cannot now. Is there a possibility of suing the college authorities and asking for remuneration ?

Yes you can file complaint against them and also claim damages from them. But you have to prove that the original marks cards are in their custody during the course of your study. Have you got any receipt from them when you submit your original documents.
