Dowry under Muslim Law

According to Muslim personal laws, there is nothing that is referred to as “dowry” or “bride price.” However, there is custom of giving a “Mahr” or “Dower”, which is payment from your husband or his family to you, especially to support you in the event of your husband’s death.

Certain important aspects of “Mahr” or “bride wealth” are:
  • It is legal and falls under Muslim personal laws.
  • You have a fundamental religious right to get Mahr.
  • Given to you by your husband or his parents.
  • It is only given to you and not to your parents.
  • Establishes your financial independence from your parents as well as your husband.
  • The husband and his parents do not have any legal claim over Mahr given to you.
