The Supreme Court in 2006 made it compulsory to register the marriage for the protection of women.
Therefore, to register a marriage one must follow the following procedure-
Under Hindu Law-
The couple on any working day can apply at office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of a District Court in whose jurisdiction the husband or wife have residences. The following documents are mandatory for a registration of the marriage-

1. Complete registration application with signatures of both husband and wife.
2. Proof of DOB- Aadhar card/ Pan card/ Voter ID card/ Passport etc.
3. Proof of Address- Aadhar card/ Pan card/ Voter ID card/ Passport etc.
4. Aadhar card.
5. 2 photographs of husband/ wife and 1 marriage photograph.
6. All the above documents must be self-attested.
