Danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation
BNS section 285, which is part of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), deals with danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation.
Whoever, by doing any act, or by omitting to take order with any property in his possession or under his charge, causes danger, obstruction or injury to any person in any public way or public line of navigation, shall be punished, with fine which may extend to five thousand rupees.

1. Purpose of the Law
Section 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (“BNS”) serves the purpose of preventing any person from causing any form of obstruction to a public way or a line of navigation, which may cause any harm or injury to any person. This provision even applies to an obstruction of such nature being caused by the property in a person’s possession.
2. Penalties for Non-Compliance
Section 285 provides for the punishment of fine of up to INR 5,000/- (Rupees Five Thousand Only).
