Q: Can I defend slapping someone because they verbally abused & provoked?

I was troubled by someone by not returning my money. When I went to inquire at his home, he provoked me by abusing and categorically saying that he won't return the money. I desperately needed my money back as my child is getting married soon. Amongst all this, I ended up slapping him, which became a serious fight. Eventually, I ended up getting more physically hurt. Will the action be against me for slapping first or against him for provoking & causing more physical harm to me?
