• 10cr suit filed on Salman for the rape remark

    June 27, 2016

What seemed like a very casual remark by a superstar, has now rolled onto one of the big talking points across the country. When Salman Khan, reputed actor and entertainer, made the comment, he would not have imagined that down the road he would be charged with a 10cr lawsuit for his rape remark.

A gang-rape survivor from Hisar has served a legal notice on actor Salman Khan, seeking Rs 10 crore as damages for “trauma“ caused by his recent remark that a gruelling shoot had made him feel like a raped woman. The notice was sent to the actor's Mumbai residence on Saturday .

Salman's remark, made during a press conference last week, has triggered widespread outrage, with the National Commission for Women saying he wo uld be summoned if he didn't pub licly apologise.

Plaintiff Reshma (name changed) was abducted by a group of 10 goons four years ago, and raped. Her father later committed suicide. Four of the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court, and Reshma has moved the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking death penalty for them. “My client is going through a very troublesome period of psychological trauma after hearing your statement. Your statement, dated 21-06-2016, is solely responsible for her mental and psychological degradation and she is in touch with a psychiatrist for counselling,“ her lawyer says in the legal notice.

Reshma, who is engaged with an NGO working for the rehabilitation of rape survivors, said she will take the fight to its logical conclusion. “How can such a prominent personality use such words? How could he take such things so lightly? It's not just me; other victims are also disturbed. We shall ensure that he faces adequate action,“ she added.

It was only a few days back that a rape victim had penned down an open letter to Salman Khan expressing her angst and despair. Amidst the uproar over Salman Khan's ' raped woman' analogy, gang-rape survivor Sunitha Krishnan, a Padma Shri awardee social activist, has penned a scathing open letter to the actor. In her letter, Sunitha put together her thoughts and concerns about, saying "I do not wish to take the name of the person in question because I feel it would be an act of giving him too much respect. The fact that he could easily compare himself to being raped shows how badly he has trivialised rape and rape culture. The harsh truth is that good looks and some talent made him the star that he is and he takes this role very lightly. With such fame, comes responsibility.

The actors are the major influencing powerhouses in a country like india where the people live and breathe the Bollywood. Salman, has in the past, made such remarks and drew flak from the general public. His hit and run case jokes do the rounds almost every other day on TV or the internet. When the actor clearly knows the power he has in his hands, the act of making that comment becomes even more disrespectful and shameful. But what is really stood out from this case of carelessness is that, whoever may it be- be it a lay person or a huge superstar like Salman Khan, you cannot make public disturbing statements and get away with it.
