First Zero FIR Filed Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for Laptop Theft in Hyderabad

July 22, 2024

The city’s first zero First Information Report (FIR) under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was filed at Cubbon Park police station on Saturday. This was based on a complaint filed by a private firm employee from Bengaluru regarding the theft of his laptop at a convention centre in Hyderabad on July 9.

Under the zero FIR facility, one can lodge complaints with any police station across the country, regardless of jurisdiction. The case has been registered under Section 305a (Theft in a dwelling house, or means of transportation or place of worship, etc) of the BNS Act.

The complainant, Apoorv Prakash from Vasanth Nagar, had visited Hyderabad to take part in a conference held at Hyderabad International Conference Hall on July 9. Prakash works with a private firm on Vittal Mallya Road.

“After the conference got over, I noticed that my bag containing the laptop, costing around Rs 70,000, was stolen. As I was scheduled to take the flight to Bengaluru the same evening, I could not file a complaint at the jurisdictional police station in Hyderabad,” Prakash stated in his complaint.

The FIR has been transferred to Hyderabad city police, from where it will be redirected to the station concerned. “Earlier, police who first registered the FIR should have visited the spot and carried mahazar before transferring it. Now, the responsibility of visiting the spot and carrying out mahazar lies on the police to whom the FIR has been transferred. Accordingly, Hyderabad police will visit the spot,” an officer explained.
