P Chidambaram denied anticipatory bail by Delhi HC in INX media scam case

August 21, 2019

Senior Advocate and Former Union Minister Shri P Chidambaram has been denied anticipatory bail by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday in the corruption and money laundering cases related to the INX media scam. The Court has stated that the case against Chidambaram is a “ classic case of money laundering” and it has been revealed from the facts of the case that the petitioner is the key conspirator in the case. While dismissing the petition, the Court also reproduced evasive replies given by Chidambaram to the questions put to him when he was under interim protection from arrest which was granted to him on 25th July 2018 and was also extended time to time. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had both opposed the anticipatory bail request of P. Chidambaram during the arguments stating that he has been evasive during the questioning due to which his custodial interrogation was required. Further, they had contended that there were irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) during the term of Chidambaram as Finance Minister and clearance was granted of overseas funds to the tune of Rs. 305 crore to be received by the media group. It was also contended by the ED that the entities in which the money was transferred were directly or indirectly managed by Chidambaram's son, Karti, and the FIPB approval to INX media was granted due to his son's intervention. The role of the former Union Minister came into the scanner by various investigating agencies in the Rs. 3,500 crore deal of Aircel-Maxis and the INX Media case involving Rs. 305 crore. The petition filed by Chidambaram stated that though summons has not been served on him by the ED, he has an apprehension of arrest upon a summons issued by the CBI to him who is probing the scheduled charges.
