Man convicted for smuggling ganja slashes throat in Vishakhapatnam Court
November 23, 2018A 27-year-old man attempted suicide by cutting his throat in the open court on Monday, November 19, 2018, after he and six other people were convicted and sentenced to undergo imprisonment for 14 years along with a fine of Rs. One lakh each for smuggling ganja (marijuana). The case against the accused was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The man took out a pocket knife from his shirt pocket and started slashing his throat immediately after the Court announced the verdict. The Judge and the advocate present during the hearing were greatly astonished at the incident. The injured man was immediately rushed to the King George Hospital as drops of blood covered the court hall.
The Court had acquitted two persons and had convicted six accused in the matter. Upset from the Court order the accused decided to kill himself. The condition of the man is critical and would undergo surgery at the KGH hospital, stated the Inspector.
The man is a resident of MK Patnam village, Rolugunta, Andhra Pradesh and was arrested in October 2016 along with seven other for smuggling around 300kg of dry ganja. The man had got bail after a few months of arrest and had come to the Court for the final hearing.
