Volkswagen ordered to deposit 100 crore for using cheat device in emission test
November 17, 2018The German auto major, Volkswagen has allegedly used & lsquo cheat device' in emission tests of its diesel vehicles. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday, November 16, 2018 has directed the automobile company to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for the same.
The Court, in order to calculate the actual quantum of the environmental loss, has formed a committee comprising officials of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Heavy Industries, CPCB and Automotive Research Association of India.
The Green Tribunal has directed the committee to submit its report in a period of 1 month and has asked the company to present its contentions before the panel within 7 days.
The Court has been hearing pleas seeking ban on sale of Volkswagen vehicles for alleged violation of emission norms.
Volkswagen had earlier presented a roadmap in the Court to recall over 3.23 lakh vehicles in India fitted with a & lsquo defeat device' meant to fudge emission tests, which is a software in diesel engines to manipulate emission tests by changing the performance of the cars globally.
The National Green Tribunal is a special tribunal established to handle the speedy disposal of the cases relating to environmental issues.
