A pregnant lady left unattended in labour pain, dies with her unborn child

July 18, 2018

A pregnant woman died due to alleged medical negligence during her labour pain at a hospital in Jammu's Doda district. The authorities have been provoked to order a magisterial inquiry into the death of the pregnant woman. The pregnant woman, 35-year-old, Shaista Begum was brought to the district hospital for delivery however, she could not survive and died the next morning. The relatives believe that the negligence of the doctors became the cause of her death. The woman's husband has claimed that she was provided the initial treatment and left unattended in the labour room which ultimately led to her death. Further, it has been alleged that the nurses and the doctors in the labour room preferred to sleep rather than help the pregnant woman even after repeated requests by the family members. The family of the deceased also said that their local sub-centre at Binola was shut for days due to which they had to bring Begum to the district centre for delivery. Upon surprise inspection, it was confirmed that the sub centre at Binola was locked. Two female multipurpose health workers posted at the sub-centre Binola have been suspended and called for the departmental inquiry. The Chief Medical Officer has now been asked to make alternate arrangements for the functioning of the sub-centre Binola.
