State should take care of its senior citizens says Uttarakhand High Court
June 17, 2018In a bid to protect the rights of senior citizens, the Uttarakhand High Court has directed the State Government to set up old age homes for the senior citizens.
In its decision by a bench of J. Rajiv Sharma and J. Lok Pal Singh, has issued several guidelines for the state govt. to follow. It has also encouraged the government to take steps on its own rather than relying on NGOs or Societies.
The decision is pursuant to a PIL filed by the Senior Citizens Welfare Organization under the Maintenance and Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 seeking the welfare and betterment of senior citizens.
The guidelines issued by court include setting up of old age homes in each district within a period of six months. The old age homes should be adequately equipped with water, electricity, kitchen supplies etc. It should also have entertainment and leisure facilities for the senior citizens such as television, newspapers, books etc.
The state government should also ensure that each government hospital has enough number of beds and free tests and medicines for the senior citizens.
The guidelines issued are in lieu of the Maintenance and Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens Act and its full and effective implementation, since the Act has been in force for the past 11 years, yet very few steps have been taken by the State government.
