Government’s draft passenger charter to make air travel more passengers friendly
May 22, 2018In an aim to improve passenger experience for air travel, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha has unveiled a Draft Air Passenger Charter. It is in consonance with its sister schemes introduced to ease air travel such as DigiYatra, AirSewa App and Wifi Connectivity in flights. Currently the Draft Charter has been placed for public perusal.
The Charter outlines that the passengers shall be compensated if there is any delay on the end of the airline. If there is any cancellation of a domestic flight, or it’s delay by more than four hours (communicated a day in advance), the passenger shall be entitled for compensation.
If an air ticket booked by a passenger is cancelled within 24 hours of booking it, provided that the time bracket between the booking of the air ticket and the date of flight is a period of 96 hours, the passenger will be able to cancel the ticket without any charge.
In addition to this, if a passenger misses a connecting flight due to delay by the airline, travellers would be entitled a compensation ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000.
If the flight is standing at the tarmac for more than 60 minutes, the passengers shall be provided with hot snacks and beverages. If the period of wait extends to 120 minutes, the passengers shall be de-boarded.
Other benefits include compensation in cases of baggage loss, in cases of both domestic and international flights. The compensation would range from Rs. 3,000 per kilogram of baggage loss and Rs. 1,000 per kilogram in cases of damage or delay.
The Directive provides for communication and awareness of the information to the passengers as the Charter would be the first to regulate air travel portals.
