National Association for Blind to rehabilitate blind rape survivor
May 20, 2018The National Association for the Blind has now decided to direct the rehabilitation of the 20-year-old visually impaired girl who was allegedly raped at her home by her neighbor in central Delhi.
The survivor’s uncle allegedly committed suicide at a park near their house as he was upset and depressed after the incident.
Now, the girl will be given counseling and rehabilitation that would include guiding her towards some sort of vocational training to prepare her to be independent financially.
In addition, the State Commissioner for People with Disabilities emphasized the need to coordinate and make sure counseling and rehabilitation opportunities to the survivor and support to her mother.
The National Association for the Blind in their statement told that they get numerous cases where girls are sexually harassed by family members and even others around them due to their disabilities. These girls constantly face problems like sexual violence and confinement. The issue is deeper and directly linked to society and its perception which needs to change. We need to work to secure these girls and ensure greater attention to build awareness to ensure safety for them in their homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces.”
